Wellbeing, care and kindness strategy

Doing research and activism to prevent and respond to – as well as analyze and describe – violence against women and violence against children can have an impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals and organizations working on these difficult and painful issues. This impact takes many different forms and labels – compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, vicarious trauma among other names.

In response to and care for this reality, SVRI Forum 2022 has developed a bio-psychosocial strategy to contribute to the well-being, care, and dignity of participants during the event, both at the individual and collective level.

Our multifaceted strategy incorporates activities for resting, connecting (and reconnecting) with the self and others, and fostering creativity. All are interconnected – aiming to address the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of conference participants, and include:

  • Trauma sensitive yoga
  • Dancing sessions
  • Short chair-massage sessions
  • Outdoor walks
  • Silent refuges
  • Emotional accompaniment sessions with specialized therapists
  • Brave Room [1]
  • Meditation sessions
  • Arts-based activities
  • Dialogue circles
  • Restorative conversations
  • Networking activities

These activities will be available from September 20-23, and are open to all Forum participants: speakers, participants, translators, Hotel staff, Forum service support staff and providers. They are provided in addition to the public spaces and activities offered to other Hotel guests.

We invite you to check out the calendar of activities and to pre-register through the Forum App. Please note, some activities are designed for smaller groups (and so will have size limit), so registration is required for these events.

SVRI Forum 2022 wellbeing activities

The Covid-19 pandemic has generated atypical circumstances in which uncertainty and fear considerably reduce the bond with other people who, under normal conditions, would help us to overcome difficulties. These consequences accumulated over several months produce effects on the body/mind and on the emotions of human beings: stress, tension, anxiety, fear, uncertainty, and disconnection, among others. Besides this, the work in the field to prevent, research or reduce violence against women, children, or any other gender-based violence can also impact the body.

The stressors have impacts on individuals on the body, on the mind, on the emotions, as well as on behaviors and relationships. Our body might have entered into “survival” mode, blurring the sense of security and humanity shared with other people, making it more difficult for the body to relax, moderate its relationship with food and drugs, or regulate difficult emotions and return to balance. The feeling of calm and security is something that must first be felt in the body. When we are feeling the opposite, it seems difficult to imagine accessing a sense of calm and safety.

Body-centered (or somatic) approaches can positively change mental and emotional states. Whether due to confinement during the pandemic, or having lived through or witnessed a violent experience, or due to the accumulation of small doses of mental agitation or stress related to our jobs, the body accumulates tensions that sometimes become so heavy that the mind chooses not to recognize them, generating a disconnection between the body and the mind. When we do not recognize the sensations and needs of the body, it is more difficult to attend to them in time.

Through the practice of Yoga, mindfulness, dancing, arts-based activities, chair massages, restorative conversations, Dialogue Circles, and emotional support sessions, SVRI Forum 2022 participants are invited and encouraged to support balance in their physical, emotional, mental and relational wellbeing.

Emotional accompaniment seeks to help us reconnect with our stories, our emotions, our abilities and strengths.

Each session will move through a series of rhythms, slow at first, exploring fluidity and space, building pace for some energetic release, and finishing with a dance with our own heart. No dance experience required. What this is not: This is not a follow-the-leader dance class, but an invitation to move in whatever ways suit your body. This is also not a performance or spectator space; please plan to participate rather than coming to watch. All ages, mobilities, and bodies are welcome. Comfortable clothing is encouraged, and it can be good to have water with you.

Short chair-massage sessions (English and Spanish)

Chair massage that involves manual pressure applied to specific points on the back and shoulders in an attempt to relieve tension and pain. According to the Japanese healing treatment, Shiatsu (meaning finger pressure) massage uses thumbs, fingers, elbows, and knees to concentrate pressure at certain energy pathways in the body called meridians. The massage also known as acupressure works to reduce muscle tension and fatigue and is thought to improve blood circulation in the body as well as improve function of the lymphatic system. No pre registration will be required.

Arts-based expression (self-guided)

Schedule: Available throughout the conference
Duration: however much time you’d like
Location: Wall of Hope and Tapies room

Wall of hope (self-guided)

Schedule: Available throughout the conference

Description: As we listen and learn and work to heal and change patterns, hope can be an important catalyst for movement. What are we hoping to learn? What are we hoping to heal? What are we hoping to address? What are we hoping to create and structure for a world free from sexual violence? What are our sources of hope? How do we acknowledge things that rob us of hope, and dissolve their power? This wall will offer a space to engage with these questions in a collective arts-based space that will build throughout the conference.

Meditation sessions (Spanish)

Schedule: 20, 21 and 22 Sept 6.30am
Duration: 30min
Location: Mallorca 1
Facilitated by: Juan Morey
Max participants: 30px.

Based on the MBPM (Mindfulness Based Pain Management) program, it is focused on the reduction of pain and stress and to recover well being based on mindfulness and compassion. Its objective is to improve quality of life and health. Mindfulness has been scientifically studied and is offered here as a secular, technical practice. We also acknowledge its cultural roots in multiple spiritual and cultural traditions, including Buddhist and Hindu practice and Christian centering prayer, among others. The purpose of the sessions will be to provide participants with elements to self-manage both the illness and the pain (physical or emotional) as well as the stress that often arises as a result of these difficult circumstances. In addition, it teaches to develop qualities to recover essential values for life, such as compassion, kindness, equanimity, serenity, self-compassion, social / community connection, among others. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and if you want before, just have light food.

Arts-based activities (facilitated - English and Spanish)

Schedule: 21, 22 September. 14:00
Duration: 30 mins
Location: Tapies
Facilitated by: Katie Mansfield and Katia Ornelas
Max participants: 20px.

These facilitated sessions will invite participants into arts-based reflection and dreaming. No arts-based experience or talent required.

Two worlds: The session on Wednesday 21 Sep will invite participants to create a diptych or play-doh sculpture(s) acknowledging how we are often navigating two worlds. Aurora Levins Morales writes, “In order to build the movements capable of transforming our world, we have to do our best to live with one foot in the world we have not yet created.” Using either drawing or sculpting materials, participants will be invited to create the shape or visual that acknowledges the challenges of history and present, as well as the possibilities of present and future. There will be an option to share these creations in the Brave Room and/or Wall of Hope.

Tiny demons: The session on Thursday 22 Sep will invite participants into an exercise called “tiny demons” that is part of Liberating Structures, an approach to learning and organizing that is designed to liberate and unleash our creativity and sense of possibilities. This exercise involves reflecting (not too deeply) on sources of fear and anxiety in our daily life/work, creating rudimentary cartoon characters out of these, and identifying and drawing in sources of support and care for those characters. The experience of engaging playfully with patterns of stuckness and inhibition can help transform internal challenges into energy for creativity, courage, and change.

Dialogue circles

Schedule: 21, 22 and 23 September. Please check the specific time of each Circle in the description of each session in the programme.

There will be 5 dialogue circles, which have the intention to create dialogue opportunities among participants to explore 5 key-topics throughout the Forum in a more horizontal and safe space.

About the Peacemaking circle process: it is an indigenous practice rooted in specific cultures (including African, Turtle Island, Aotearoa, and Australian aboriginal contexts), adapted to various purposes and practiced in many different localities (see Fania Davis’ Little Book of Race and Restorative Justice for more information about the Indigenous roots of restorative justice practices). Its methodology is a structured dialogue process that nurtures connections and empathy while honoring the uniqueness of each participant. The circle can hold pain, joy, despair, hope, anger, love, fear and paradox. In the circle each person has the opportunity to speak his or her truth but cannot assume the truth for anyone else. It also welcomes difficult emotions and difficult realities while maintaining a sense of positive possibilities.

Dialogues Circle 1: Ethical funding
Dialogues Circle 2: Language on justice and kindness in the field
Dialogues Circle 3: Power and control in research and practice in LMICs
Dialogue Circle 4: Accountability when engaging men in the VAW field
Dialogue Circle 5: Self and collective care

Restorative conversations

Schedule: Anytime, except for the times of the 5 Circle sessions (please see the conference programme)
Duration: 30 – 50min
Location: Ribiera
Facilitated by: Participants
Max participants: 5-10px. We invite you to check-in with the OK Care team for the room’s availability.

The restorative conversations have the intention to create a more organic dialogue space, guided by restorative justice and transformative justice values and principles, such as but not limited to: interconnection, responsibility, empathy, diversity and respect. In the restorative conversations, participants can continue to listen and be heard, learn, connect, explore and reflect about different positions, interests, needs and feelings around diverse issues and topics that might or might not be addressed in the Forum activities.
